Description

Malachite is a carbonate mineral normally known as copper carbonate. This green mineral most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses. Malachite’s name is derived from Greek molochitis meaning “mallow-green stone”. Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints from antiquity until about 1800. In Greek mythology, the throne of Demeter, goddess of grain and harvest, was fashioned from malachite and adorned with golden pigs and ears of barley. This wonderful piece of malachite is hand polished and originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa. This mineral specimen of malachite weighs 1.91 pounds and measures 4.75 inches long, 4 inches high, and 3.5 inches deep.
